Asif Jamil, PhD

Dr. Asif Jamil is an Instructor and Principal Investigator in research at the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. His research lies at the intersection of human neuroimaging, cognitive neuroscience, and non-invasive neuromodulation. The primary focus of his work is to understand the causal relationship between rhythmic brain activity and cognition, with the ultimate goal of developing innovative device-based neuromodulation protocols to effectively engage and modify physiological brain activity in relation to neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Dr. Jamil earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Maryland College Park in 2011 before pursuing a Master of Science in Neuroimaging at Kings College London in 2012. He completed his PhD in Systems Neuroscience from the University of Goettingen in Germany in 2017, with a doctoral thesis centered on optimizing low-intensity non-invasive brain stimulation in humans through a neurovascular coupling model. Dr. Jamil further enriched his knowledge and experience by undergoing post-doctoral training at the Leibniz Research Institute for Working Environment and Human Factors in Dortmund, Germany from 2017 to 2020. During this time, he developed cutting-edge neuromodulation protocols that combined electrical and magnetic stimulation to effectively engage the human brain's oscillatory activity in the context of understanding and modulating human consciousness, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 research program.

In addition to his research, Dr. Jamil dedicates his time to serving as Naib Qaid Khuddamul Ahmadiyya of the Boston Chapter of the Ahmadi Muslim Youth Association USA, and Secretary of Education for the Boston Jamaat. He also contributes as the Publication Secretary for the Association of Ahmadi Muslim Scientists (AAMS) USA.
